Literacy 4/5
1. Good morning, Grade 4/5. I hope you were able to enjoy the nice weather we had on the weekend. Let's start off today by listening to a story on www.storylineonline.net.
2. Let's do some Word Work. How quickly can you make a list of words that end in "ing"? If you have a timer, set it for 5 minutes and see how many words you can come up with. Good luck!
"I can spell grade appropriate words correctly."
3. You're probably all done your writing on your dream house. I hope you enjoyed writing it. We'll do a short writing for today. As we've probably all been spending more time outdoors, I would like you to write about your favourite outdoor spring or summer activity. The length should be one paragraph (you can write more if you wish). Your focus should be on proper punctuation: periods, commas, question marks, exclamation marks, apostrophes, etc. Don't forget to indent and use capital letters correctly.
"I can write complete sentences with correct end punctuation; period, question mark, exclamation mark, comma, apostrophe, quotation marks and hyphenated words."
4. Please read for 30 minutes. Remember that when you read, you read for many different reasons.
"I read to be informed, entertained, and persuaded."
Math 4/5
1. Let's start with some practice on multiplication and division facts. Please spend 10 minutes studying each one.
"I can determine basic multiplication and division facts."
2. Click on www.coolmath4kids.com/quizzes and complete two quizzes on multiplication and two quizzes on division.
3. Let's work on some mental math strategies. Please copy the question and then answer it. Next to your answer, write the strategy you used.
a. 400 x 2 =
b. 160 x 10 =
c. 900 x 3 =
d. 2000 x 3 =
4. Please copy this word problem and solve it. Don't forget to show your work and write a sentence with the answer.
A book company purchased 3 computers. Each computer costs $ 480. What is the total cost of the 3 computers? Use addition to find the answer. Once you have the answer, use multiplication to find the same answer. If your answers are different, go back and check your calculations. Tomorrow, I will post on this page the answer to the question and how it can be solved through addition and multiplication.
Science 4/5
1. Today we'll continue our research and writing on an animal from your local habitat. Probably by the end of your time today you should have enough information to start your writing. Remember to consider these topics when looking for information:
-description
-behaviour
-life span
-range (does it stay here year-round?)
-do they make a den/nest, etc.?
-what do they eat?
-what are the dangers for this animal (from nature or from people)
2. Don't forget to get 30 minutes of physical activity.

Literacy 4/5
1. Let's start off with some timed Word Work. How many words ending in "ed" can you write out in 5 minutes?
"I can spell grade appropriate words."
2. Let's do some Listening to Reading. Click on www.storylineonline.net and pick a story.
"I can participate as an active listener."
3. Please read for 30 minutes. Included in this, please read for 10 minutes aloud.
"I can read fluently, clearly, and accurately at an appropriate rate with meaning and expression."
Math 4/5
1. Let's start with some questions using our mental math strategies. Remember to write the questions out and write your strategies next to the answers.
a. 150 x 2 =
b. 300 x 2 =
c. 600 x 3 =
d. 2000 x 10 =
"I can describe and apply mental math strategies."
2. Take 20 minutes to study your multiplication and division facts. Once you're done, click on www.coolmath4kids.com and complete four quizzes, two on multiplication and two on division.
"I can determine basic multiplication and division facts."
3. Yesterday, I asked you to answer this word problem: A book company purchased 3 computers. Each computer costs $ 480. What is the total cost of the 3 computers? Use addition to find the answer. Once you have the answer, use multiplication to find the same answer. If your answers are different, go back and check your calculations.
Here's how you could have answered the question using both addition and multiplication:
Addition
You could add the 3 prices together:
$ 480 + $ 480 + $ 480 = $ 1440
Strategy: Add the 400s to get 1200. Then, add the 80s to get 240. Finally, add 1200 + 240.
Multiplication
You could multiply $ 480 x 3 = $ 1440.
Strategy: Multiply 400 x 3 to get 1200. Then, multiply 80 x 3 to get 240. Finally add 1200 + 240.
Science 4/5
1. Today you're working on your writing about an animal from your local habitat. Don't forget to indent your paragraphs, use proper capitalization and punctuation, and draw a picture of your animal at the bottom of the page. The writing should be 1/2 page in length.
"I can identify questions to investigate about the types of plants and/or animals at a local habitat, and the conditions under which they live."
2. Good luck on your writing. Don't forget to get 30 minutes of physical activity.

"I can describe and apply mental math strategies."
a. 400 + 125 + 75 + 300 =
b. 1600 - 820 - 80 =
c. 790 + 149 + 10 + 100 + 11 =
d. 5600 + 330 + 300 + 70 =
2. Please spend 10 minutes studying your times tables facts. Please spend another 10 minutes studying your division facts.
"I can determine basic multiplication and division facts."
3. Please click on www.coolmath4kids.com/quizzes and complete four quizzes in total, two of which should be multiplication quizzes and two of which should be division quizzes.
4. Please copy this word problem and solve it. Show your work and write a sentence that includes your answer.
