Literacy 4/5
1. Good morning, Grade 4/5. Let's start off today with some timed Word Work. How many words can you think of that contain the combination of letters "or"? For example, more, store, floor. Set a timer for 5 minutes and then write the words down in your notebook/duotang. Good luck!
"I can spell grade appropriate words."
2. Click on www.storylineonline.net and choose a story to listen to.
3. Let's work on some writing. Here is today's writing prompt: "What is your favourite summer activity?" Your writing should be a paragraph to 1/2 page in length (single-spaced). Don't forget to indent, use proper spelling, and use proper punctuation.
4. Don't forget to read for 30 minutes today.
Math 4/5
1. Grade 4: Please copy these questions and answer them. Show your work.
a. 25 x 7 =
b. 25 ÷ 5 =
c. 32 x 8 =
d. 32 ÷ 8 =
e. 72 x 9 =
f. 72 ÷ 9 =
2. Grade 5: We're going to learn how to divide a 3-digit number by a 1-digit number. Please read the following example carefully, and then copy and complete the practice questions.
Sometimes, 3-digit by 1-digit division is fairly straightforward. For example, 300 ÷ 3 = 100. But what happens when you have numbers that don't lend themselves well to mental math strategies? Let's take the following question as our example:
987 ÷ 3 = ?
We need to rewrite the question using the long division symbol. Click here for an example. I will use a forward slash with dotted lines above to make the symbol on the computer.
___
3/987
We can solve this question by breaking it up into smaller questions and getting partial answers. So, we ask ourselves, is there a number equal to or less than 987 that can easily be divided by 3? What about 300?
300 ÷ 3 = 100
So, our question would look like this:
___
3/987
- 300 100 (this is my first partial answer)
We then subtract the 300 from 987 because we have already divided 300 ones from the 987 ones by 3.
___
3/987
- 300 100
687
Now follow the same procedure, but this time with the remaining ones: 687. Is there a number equal to or less than 687 that can easily be divided by 3? What about 600?
600 ÷ 3 = 200
___
3/987
- 300 100
687
-600 200 (this is my second partial answer)
87
Now follow the procedure again. Is there a number equal to or less than 87 that we can divide by 3? What about 60?
60 ÷ 3 = 20
___
3/987
- 300 100
687
-600 200
87
- 60 20 (this is my third partial answer)
27
Follow the procedure again. Is there a number equal to or less than 27 that we can divide by 3? What about 27?
27 ÷ 3 = 9
___
3/987
- 300 100
687
-600 200
87
- 60 20
27
- 27 9 (this is my fourth partial answer)
0
We have now divided all the ones in 987 and are left with 0. All that's left is to add up the partial answers to find the real answer: 100 + 200 + 20 + 9 = 329.
So, 987 ÷ 3 = 329.
Try these two questions using the strategy above:
a. 424 ÷ 8 =
b. 504 ÷ 9 =
Science 4/5
1. Last week, you completed your assignment on a plant in your local habitat. I had asked you to draw a picture at the bottom of your page. I would like to provide one more day to work on this.

Literacy 4/5
1. Good morning, Grade 4/5. Let's start off with some timed Word Work. How many words can you think of that contain the combination of letters "la"? Set a timer for 5 minutes and write the words in your notebook/duotang. Good luck!

3. Let's work on some writing. Here's your writing prompt for today: "Describe a time that you helped a family member or friend."
Remember, your writing should be about one paragraph to 1/2 page in length (single-spaced.
"I can write for a purpose, consider my audience, choose a specific topic, narrow my focus, and choose an appropriate text form."
4. Don't forget to read for 30 minutes today.
"I can read to be informed, entertained, and persuaded."
Math 4/5
1. Grade 4: Please copy and answer these questions.
a. 81 ÷ 9 =
b. 81 x 9 =
c. 36 ÷ 9 =
d. 36 x 9 =
e. 45 ÷ 9 =
f. 45 x 9 =
2. Grade 5: Today we will look at another division strategy for 3-digit by 1-digit division. When we write our work for these types of questions, as we did yesterday, it is known as long division. We will use the same question for today's example as yesterday:
987 ÷ 3 =
We still write the question using the long division symbol:
___
3/987
So, we first ask, how many times can 3 fit into 9? The answer is 3, so we write 3 on top of the division bracket.
3
3/987
Then, multiply 3 x 3 to get 9 and write that 9 below the 9 hundreds. Then subtract 9 from 9.
3
3/987
- 9
0
Now we ask ourselves, how many times can 3 go into 0? It can't, so we bring the 8 tens down from the 987. Now, how many times can 3 go into 8? The answer is 2. So we write 2 on top of the long division symbol. Then we multiply 2 x 3 to get 6. Write the 6 below the 8 that we brought down. Subtract: 8 - 6 = 2.
32
3/987
- 9
08
- 6
2
Again, we ask ourselves, how many times can 3 fit into 2. It can't, so we bring the 7 ones down from 987 to make 27. How many times does 3 go into 27? The answer is 9. Write 9 above the long division symbol. Multiply 9 x 3 to get 27. Write this below the first 27. Then, subtract to get 0.
329
3/987
- 9
08
- 6
27
- 27
0
Try these questions using the strategy we just reviewed. If you're having trouble, try the strategy from yesterday.
a. 324 ÷ 9 =
b. 390 ÷ 7 =
Science 4/5
1. We're going to begin looking at animals in our habitat and why they behave the way they do. For example, you might see a squirrel run up a tree. Why is the squirrel doing that? For shelter? For protection? We'll look at one animal per day. All you have to do is observe an animal in your local habitat, write down what the animal was doing, and why you think it was doing that. If you're unable to observe an animal, I will provide an example each day. Here's today's example:
A crow flies by with a branch in its mouth.
"I can compare the external features an behavioural patterns of various animals and relate these features to their ability to meet their basic needs in their natural habitats."
