Literacy 4/5
1. Good morning, Grade 4/5. Let's start off with some timed Word Work. Try to write as many words as you can in 5 minutes that begin with the letter "M". At the end of 5 minutes, count how many you have and also check for any spelling errors. Good luck!
"I can spell grade appropriate words."
2. Click on www.storylineonline.net and listen to a story.
"I can participate as an active listener and speaker."
3. Let's start working on a persuasive writing piece. Persuasive writing is used to change someone's opinion. Your persuasive writing piece should be 5 paragraphs in length, or 1 single-spaced page. We will do a draft copy and then a good copy. First, you might want to brainstorm some ideas. Here's a few examples. You can pick one of these for your writing if you wish.
-You are trying to convince your parents/guardians to get a pet
-Children should be able to vote
-Basketball is the best sport in the world
-Stories are better told through books than television or movies
The structure should be as follows:
-First paragraph - introduction
-Second paragraph - first reason/argument to convince your reader
-Third paragraph - second reason/argument to convince your reader
-Fourth paragraph - third reason/argument to convince your reader
-Fifth paragraph - conclusion
Remember to indent all paragraphs, use proper capitalization, and proper punctuation.
The introduction is used to tell the reader what your topic is, perhaps a little background on the topic, and to outline your three reasons/arguments.
The conclusion is used to summarize your reasons/arguments and to add some closing thoughts.
4. Don't forget to read 30 minutes today.
Fiction: "I can explain the elements of the story."
Non-fiction: "I can explain the characteristics of the text."
Math 4/5
1. Let's start off with some warm-up questions. Please copy these down and use mental math strategies to answer them. Please write next to your answer what your strategy/strategies was/were.
a. 101 + 88 + 12 + 98 + 1 =
b. 230 + 75 + 15 + 300 =
c. 468 + 60 + 12 + 100 =
d. 500 + 499 + 12 + 11 =
2. Grade 4: Last week, we started looking at multiplying a single-digit number by a two-digit or three-digit number. I explained two different algorithms (strategies). You may use either one to answer the following questions. If you need a review, click on the page "Monday, May 4, 2020" in the website menu and scroll down to Friday's lesson.
a. 175 x 6 =
b. 38 x 9 =
c. 399 x 9 =
d. 48 x 4 =
3. Grade 5: Last week, we started learning about multiplying a two-digit number by a two-digit number. I went over one algorithm last week, which I asked you to use for the first set of questions last week. If you need a review, click on the page "Monday, May 4, 2020" in the website menu and scroll down to Friday's lesson. Today I will explain the older method. Let's use this example:
34
x 28
Start by multiplying the 8 in 28 by the 4 in 34. That gives an answer of 32. Place the 2 below the 8 and put the 3 above the 3 in 34. It should look like this:
3
34
x 28
2
Then, multiply the 8 in 27 by the 3 in 34. That gives an answer of 24. Add the 3 that you placed above the 34 to 24 which gives an answer of 27. Place the 27 in front of the partial answer 2, which gives another partial answer of 272. It should look like this:
3
34
x 28
272
Now, we will be multiplying the 2 in 28 by the 4 in 34 and the 3 in 34. However, before we can do this, we must put a placeholder 0 below the ones place of 272. This is because we are now multiplying from the tens place (the 2 in 28 is 2 tens). Therefore, we are essentially multiplying 20 by 4 and 20 by 3. It should look like this:
3
34
x 28
272
0
So, 2 x 4 = 8. Place that 8 next to the zero. Then, multiply 2 x 3, which gives an answer of 6. Place the 6 in front of the 8. It should look like this:
3
34
x 28
272
+680
Add a plus sign in front of the 680. Then add the two partial answers together: 272 + 680. Your answer should be 952. It should look like this:
3
34
x 28
272
+680
952
That is the older method. If you need to, review the steps over again and write out the example question in your notebook/duotang as you go through the steps. Please answer these questions using either algorithm (strategy).
a. 73 x 36 =
b. 89 x 98 =
c. 33 x 58 =
d. 21 x 49 =
Science 4/5
1. Last week, I asked you to work on an animal food chain diagram. Hopefully, you've completed this. This week, you'll be doing some observation of the local habitat where you live. All you'll need to do is to record what you see. Next week, we'll apply the results to our prior learning and draw some new conclusions. Your observations can be done in a chart on one page. You won't have to watch out your window for minutes at a time. I just ask that you look out the window a few times during the day and/or remember what you see when you play outside. out Here's what you should put on your chart: (you'll notice I filled in Monday as an example for you to follow). Under the Animals and their Interactions heading, write if you saw any animals and if they interacted with other animals or plants or objects. Under the Plants and Changes, please write what plant you saw and if you saw a change in it, or an animal eating the plant or using the plant for shelter, etc. Good luck!
