1. Good morning, Grade 4/5. Let's start with some Word Work. Try to make a list of words that begin with "ch". For example, chair, choose, chance. Try to make a list of 10. If you're able to make a list of 10 easily, try making a list of 15 or 20. Good luck!
"I can spell grade appropriate words."
2. Let's do some quick writing. Please make some super sentences with the following words.

hat
turn
run
create
3. Please read for 30 minutes. This can be done now, or at some point throughout the day. Please keep in mind this "I can" statement:
Fiction: "I can explain the elements of the story: setting, characters, events, problems, and solution/resolution."
Non-fiction: "I can explain characteristics of non-fiction text: heading, sub-headings, captions, graphics, tables."
Math 4/5
1. On Friday, I presented a Math problem to work on. Here is the problem, along with the solution.
On Monday, David read 23 pages in his novel. On Tuesday, he read 39. On Wednesday, he read 19. On Thursday, he read 36. On Friday, he almost finished the novel by reading 51 pages. The number of pages left to read in the book is the same as the amount of pages that David read on Monday and Wednesday.
a. How many pages in total did he read? 168 (Add all the days' total pages together)
b. How many pages are there in the book? 210 (Add the previous total plus the total of Monday and Wednesday)
c. How many pages does he have to read to finish the book? 42 (This is the total of Monday and Wednesday)
d. On which day did he read the most pages? Friday
e. On which day did he read the least pages? Wednesday
"I can identify the unknown in a problem, represent the problem with an equation (your calculations), and solve the problem concretely, pictorially, or symbolically."
2. Please spend 10 minutes studying your times tables and 10 minutes studying your division facts. Writing them out is good practice.
3. Please click on www.coolmath4kids.com and complete four quizzes, two on multiplication and two on division.
4. Please copy these mental math questions. Answer them and write next to your answer what strategies you used.
a. 1400 + 77 + 600 + 299 =
b. 1500 + 1500 + 349 + 51 =
c. 399 + 299 + 499 + 599 =
d. 81 x 1000 =
Science 4/5
1. By now, you have a good understanding of a specific animal that you researched. Your animal lives in the habitat where you live. What if your animal were to change habitats? Maybe they moved for food, or because people were building something that took away their habitat. I'd like you to think of another habitat for your animal to live in. It could be a place that is colder, warmer, has more or less rain, more trees, less trees, etc. In your notebook/duotang, describe this new habitat. Then, write what changes your animal would have to make to live in this new habitat. The entire writing should be about one paragraph in length.
"I can predict the structural and/or behavioural adaptations needed for an animal to live in a particular habitat, either real or imagined."
2. Don't forget to get 30 minutes of physical activity.

Math 4/5
1. Please spend ten minutes studying your multiplication facts and ten minutes studying your division facts. Writing them out is a good way to memorize them.
"I can determine basic multiplication and division facts."
2. Grade 4: Let's go over multiplying a two-digit or three-digit number by a single-digit number.
By now, you should have a good command of your times tables to 9. But what do we do when larger numbers are involved?
Let's take this example: 39 x 8. Here's the steps to follow to solve this.
Break down the 39 into 30 + 9. Multiply 30 x 8 and 9 x 8. Then add the two answers. So, 30 x 8 = 240 (remember, multiply 8 x 3 and then add a 0) and 9 x 8 = 72. So, 240 + 72 = 312.
This is one algorithm that can be used to solve two-digit or three-digit by one-digit multiplication. However, the older method is still fine to use. Take this example: 76 x 5. You would multiply the 5 x 6 to get 30. You place the 0 of 30 at the bottom and put the 3 above the 7. Then, multiply 5 x 7 to get 35 and add 3 to get 38. Put the 38 next to the 0 to get the answer of 380.
76
x 5
380
Please copy these questions and answer them in your notebook/duotang.
a. 72 x 9 =
b. 63 x 7 =
c. 19 x 6 =
d. 96 x 8 =
3. Grade 5: Let's start learning how to multiply a two-digit number by a two-digit number.
The first strategy I will show is one in which we break down each two-digit number into expanded form. Let's take this example:
56 x 72 =
Rewrite it in brackets as (50 + 6) x (70 + 2). Then you multiply each number in the first bracket by each number in the second bracket. Write all the answers down (you should have 4) and then add them together for the final answer.
50 x 70 = 3500 (5 x 7 = 35 and add two zeros)
50 x 2 = 100
6 x 70 = 420
6 x 2 = 12
4032
On Monday, I will review how to multiply two-digit by two-digit numbers using the older method.
Using this algorithm (strategy), please answer the following questions. Don't forget to copy them down in your notebook/duotang.
a. 45 x 78 =
b. 17 x 17 =
c. 58 x 93 =
d. 34 x 73 =

6 x 2 = 12
